Many thanks to the families who came to our Hayhurst Halloween Chess Tournament, especially those who gave their time before, during, and after the event.

For Chess Club families, please make sure to read to the bottom for a big announcement about what we are doing with the money we raised.

First, here are some of the tournament numbers I’m most proud of:
  • 200+ children registered from Oregon and Washington
  • 15 tournament scholarships awarded to low-income schools (the highest amount awarded at an OSCF tournament)
  • 18 Hayhurst kids gained valuable tournament experience, a record turnout.
  • 30 (approximate) volunteers banded together to make the event run smoothly. We actually left early!
Congratulations to all players, especially Yuval, Xander, and Tate, who earned plus scores in U600, Benjamin and Jasper, who earned plus score medals in U900, and Pace, who achieved an even score and new peak rating in the Open Division. The full results have been posted here.
The tournament will pay for all our ChessKid memberships, Advanced Coaching from a USCF master, and chess materials. And here is the big announcement:

This year’s tournament was such a financial success that we are giving away at least 20 tournament scholarships to members of the Hayhurst Chess Club.
We won’t have this kind of surplus every year, so let’s enjoy it while we can. Any scholarships not given will roll over to next year. The only request is that if you receive one, please do attend the tournament because many won’t give refunds.

All you have to do is send me your child’s name, grade, and the tournament she or he wants to attend and I will register the team together. The next tournament is the KFE Benefit in Tigard on November 10.
Best,
[And thank you Chad Lykins for making the 2018 Hayhurst Halloween Chess Tournament happen!]
