School Activity: The Hayhurst Peace Garden 2018
March 14, 2018 @ 9:30 am - 11:00 am
Dear Hayhurst Community,
On Wednesday, March 14th, elementary schools across America will be promoting safe and supportive environments for our children.
Hayhurst will be honoring the voices of our students and supporting the local and national effort to address student and school safety. It is important that we do all we can to promote safety and help students to feel supported.
Every school is doing this in a little different way. Here’s our plan:
- At 9:30 a.m. we will talk about safety at school, ways that we can be safe, ways that we are safe in our community and homes, and a discussion on why we practice lock downs in our classroom.
- At 9:45 a.m. we will practice a district required lock down.
- At the end of the lock down each class will discuss what just occurred and review how the class did throughout the process.
- Then at 10:00 we will create wonderful fabric ribbons and words to hang in our “PEACE GARDEN”.
You are welcome to join the classroom teachers in creating these ribbons and then together the class will go and hang them in our garden courtyard. Between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. we will hang 400 ribbons in our courtyard to create a peaceful garden reflecting hope, peace, love, kindness, respect, community, and safety as an expression of who we are and what we hope for.
This is a good time for you to talk to your children about safety in your home, school and community, and discuss ways that you can support, actions that you can take, and words that we can use to create a safer place.
Thank you in your support at home as we engage in these important activities at school.
