Garden Education Update
We are pleased to share that our garden and outdoor nature courtyard have been very popular this season. Read below for the many ways Hayhurst students are sharing the space.
All School Opportunity
Over the past few years we have been the recipient of a Grant through Food Front. Each month we received a portion of the Apples for Schools proceeds (bags of apples that are sold at the store) to be used for activities related to gardening at the school. The Garden Committee decided this year to use these funds to offer Garden Education through Green Schoolhouse to all classes at Hayhurst. Every classroom will have a garden lesson in October. The Fall lessons will focus on the garden in the Fall as well as experiencing the garden with different senses. If your child has already had their session ask them what they tasted and smelled. Green Schoolhouse will also be doing another lesson for all classes in the Spring.
Grade Specific Projects
Kindergarten: All three classes have participated in the annual Pumpkin Study Project. Students harvested, weighed and measured pumpkins. They also explored stories and art projects related to seasonal fun and life cycles.
1st Grade: All three classes have participated in the annual Insect Study. Students looked for and studied insects and their hiding places, followed with discussions of which critters are insects and which are not.
2nd Grade: A Habitat Study is in the works.
Class Specific Outings
Many of our staff have been taking their classes out for various study, writing and observation experiences throughout the day.
