For those who were unable to make Ms. Bourland’s coffee hour here are some summaries from Hayhurst PTA President, Kirsten Carr.

The School Day & Attendance

School day is 8-2:15. Attendance will be taken. HOWEVER, the schedule for what that looks like is still TBD.

There will be 2 hours and 20 minutes of instructional time for K-3 and for 2 hours and 30 minutes for grades 4-8.

Click here for a document with info from the Oregon Dept of Ed with explanations of how that might look. The district is meeting today to clarify how it will look more specifically in PPS. Focus on pages 17-26. Page 26 is the sweet spot.

Attendance will be taken but there will also be a consideration for those families who are unable to join instruction in real-time.

Hayhurst Elementary School Office

Please make sure the office has your contact info aS we will be updating the list for email distribution. Click here to email Kathy Lee.

Seesaw

Seesaw will be used for all grades and there was discussion about how frustrating this format is for organization.

This is a district decision not a school decision it seems.

Passwords and other info is forthcoming.

Chromebooks

Chromebooks will be distributed. There will be more information forthcoming. Also, let PTA know if you need headphones and or a computer mouse. There was no specific clarity on if families are responsible for damage but there is availability for exchange if damaged.

School supplies

PTA will be distributing school supplies for home use. We are getting lists from teachers soon (they don’t return to work until next Thursday so we have to be patient) and once we have that we will assemble supplies for all to have at home. These will either be picked up at the school or delivered.

We will also be supporting teachers with needs in the classroom. Please consider a donation to the school to cover the costs that the PTA will incur for these. We did not have our biggest fundraiser last year. We have some in savings but will rely on ongoing support to be able to make this happen.

Last year the suggested donation was $35 per kiddo. If you have school supplies to share, you can also drop them at my house – see below. Place these in a nicer bag on front porch, please.

You can also mail a check to the school. Make checks payable to Hayhurst PTO (we are changing to PTO from PTA this year) and send to 5037 SW Iowa St, Portland, OR 97221

Food Bags

We will have ongoing food bag program. We could use volunteers and donations to continue to meet not just food needs but also hygiene and household cleaning needs for our families with food insecurity. We anticipate we may have more families in need this year with the current economy.

Teacher Support

We will be asking for room Reps to help out with supporting each teacher. If you have time or resources to help, please contact Jennifer Zwartverwer and let her know your availability. We will also be trying to think of things to do for teacher appreciation as want to make our teachers feel our support during these stressful times.

Contact: Jennifer below.

Tutors

We have compiled a list of non-PPS vetted community folks interested in helping families with educational support. Here is a link to that list.

Hayhurst Community Needs Assessment Form

The PTA also has a form you can fill out if you have or need things. Obviously, we want you to let the school know of most needs for your family to safeguard your privacy. But if there are things you need or have, please share them as you feel comfortable.

Bottles and Cans

We continue to accept bottles and cans at my house – 5252 SW Idaho – west side of the house along the fence but down the stairs and out of view from the street. We use funds from these to support our food bag program.

During COVID times we have already raised almost $1000. Keep up the good work!
