Nine teams (more than 35 kids!) in grades 3, 4 and 5 tested their knowledge of 16 books as part of the statewide Oregon Battle of the Books.  Congratulations to all the kids who participated!  They got to read a lot of great books, work as a team and have fun.  All teams showed their Husky pride by demonstrating the highest level of sportsmanship.

Four teams will move forward to the OBOB semi-final round on Monday, 2/12.  They are: Reading Witches, Darth Readers, Book Bunnies and Vicious but Fluffy.  The two winning teams from that round will battle at an assembly on Friday, 2/23 and the winner will represent Hayhurst at the Regional Battles in March.

Lots of the volunteer time is needed to make this event fun.  Many thanks to all the team coaches and parents who bought books, read with their kids, provided snacks and encouragement and to Ms. Eichman (2nd grade) and Barbara Head (Hillsdale Children’s Librarian) who helped run the battles.  A special thanks to Ms. Aalto who has built up the OBOB program over the past several years into a treasured Hayhurst tradition.

If anyone is ready to get started on next year, a partial list of the books chosen for 2018-2019 OBOB Book Titles can be found at on the Oregon Battle of the Books website.

Good luck to all four teams in the semi-finals!

Thank you all for raising readers,
Laura Jones
